The short answer
For wildfire smoke, size bigger and run harder than you would for everyday air: AHAM — the body behind the standardized CADR test — recommends a smoke CADR equal to your room’s full square footage for frequent or heavy smoke, not the two-thirds rule that covers normal conditions. Then run the purifier continuously on its highest speed in the room where people spend the most time, with the house closed up. That is the EPA’s own playbook for smoke events. A 300-square-foot living room that gets by with a smoke CADR of 200 all year wants 300 when the AQI spikes.
Why smoke is a different problem than pollen
Wildfire smoke’s particles fall within the PM2.5 class — particles 2.5 microns and smaller, the fraction that penetrates deepest into the lungs, per the EPA’s smoke-composition guidance. Everyday allergens run coarser: a peer-reviewed filtration study in Clinical and Translational Allergy found most dust-mite, cat, and dog allergen mass rides on particles larger than 2.5 microns, which is why allergy loads are the easier catch for the same HEPA filter.
Two more differences raise the stakes. Smoke is a sustained outdoor source: the EPA’s exposure research finds that even a closed-up house sees indoor PM2.5 run at roughly 55–60% of the outdoor level for the duration of the event — the load keeps coming, where a pollen spike passes. And the particles themselves appear more harmful: a peer-reviewed analysis in Nature Communications found wildfire-specific PM2.5 drove respiratory hospitalizations up to ten times more strongly than the same concentration of ordinary PM2.5, with children and older adults most affected.
The smoke sizing rule
The math itself lives in our sizing guide — CADR definition, the baseline two-thirds rule, the ceiling-height adjustment. The smoke-specific change is one line: escalate from two-thirds of your square footage to all of it. The EPA’s smoke-preparedness guidance carries the escalation and credits it to AHAM directly, and Washington State’s health department points the same direction, telling consumers in smoke-prone areas to size above the two-thirds minimum. Ceilings above 8 feet still mean sizing up further, whichever ratio you’re on. Oversizing has a livability payoff too: a bigger machine hits the same clean-air delivery at a lower, quieter fan speed — the difference between a purifier you actually run all week and one you shut off the first evening.
The clean-room play
For multi-day smoke events, the EPA recommends concentrating your defense in one room rather than diluting it across the house. Its clean-room setup: pick a comfortable room you can close — a bedroom with an attached bath works — keep windows and doors shut while preserving a way out, set any HVAC fresh-air intake to recirculate, and run the purifier continuously on high. Skip particle-generating activity in there: smoking, frying, candles, and vacuuming without a HEPA-filtered vacuum. The room is aimed at whoever is most vulnerable — children, older adults, anyone with a heart or lung condition. Closing up the house is itself measurable protection: even before a purifier does anything, the EPA’s research puts a closed-up home’s indoor PM2.5 at the 55–60% of outdoor levels cited above — the purifier’s job is the remaining distance.
The smoke smell: what carbon does and doesn’t do
HEPA captures smoke particles; it does nothing about the burnt smell, which is gases — VOCs. That job belongs to activated carbon, and the EPA’s guidance on gas-phase filtration comes with a quantity warning: more sorbent is better, and thin token layers underperform. How much carbon matters is quantified in RTINGS’ instrumented testing commentary: citing published research, they put the carbon needed to hold VOC levels down in a normal room for a month at up to about a kilogram (1.1 kg) — then weighed the carbon filter in a popular purifier at 24 grams. If smoke odor is your real problem, look for machines specifying pounds of carbon, not a “carbon layer,” and expect mid-market units to blunt the smell rather than erase it.
The $40-and-up option: DIY box-fan filters
The EPA endorses well-built DIY air cleaners — a box fan with furnace filters, the Corsi-Rosenthal design — as a legitimate fallback when a commercial unit isn’t available or affordable. Its own laboratory measured them against simulated wildfire smoke, and the numbers are respectable: a fan with a single 1-inch MERV 13 filter delivered a smoke CADR of 111; adding a cardboard shroud lifted it to 156; a full four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box with shroud hit 401 — territory only large commercial purifiers reach. The shroud alone is a free 40% gain.
- Build rules (EPA): use a box fan made in 2012 or later carrying a UL or ETL mark, MERV 13 or higher filters, thicker (2–4 inch) filters where possible, and add the cardboard shroud.
- Safety rules: the CDC’s rule is never to leave a DIY unit running unattended; the EPA adds that a fan built before 2012 — a documented fire risk — must also never run while you sleep, and to skip extension cords and damaged fans and keep smoke detectors working.
- The honest tradeoffs: no carbon stage (the smell stays), more noise, and unit-to-unit performance varies — the EPA prefers commercial units with a measured CADR for exactly that reason.
Running it through a smoke event
Continuous, highest speed, for the duration — the EPA’s smoke pages land on that instruction across the board. If you have central air, the EPA adds two moves: switch the thermostat fan from “Auto” to “On” so air keeps moving through the filter between heating and cooling cycles, and run the highest MERV filter your system tolerates, with MERV 13 the named target. Expect consumables to go faster: filters load quicker in smoke, and both the EPA and Consumer Reports advise replacing them ahead of the normal schedule during heavy events — a visibly dirty filter or a noticeable airflow drop is the practical cue. One thing not to rely on: sizing or run-time decisions made for allergy season. Smoke is the harder, sustained case; it sets the spec.
What to skip
Ozone generators and ionizers have no place in a smoke event — the EPA’s smoke guidance says flatly that a portable cleaner must not produce ozone, which is a lung irritant layered on top of the smoke you’re escaping.
